Dear international debating community,

We’re happy to confirm that our annual international World Schools tournament Winter Holidays Open is happening again this year! As last year, the tournament will be taking place online. If you haven’t already, make sure to clear your schedule for December 11th to 16th.

The 2020 Info Pack is a must-read

Dear WHO 2020 participants,

To make the tournament a pleasant experience for over 500 people involved, we prepared an Info Pack containing rules and guidelines everyone needs to observe. Please make sure you take the time to read the document in its entirety before Saturday and follow the rules and guidelines we outlined there. This applies to all debaters, all adjudicators, and all coaches.

Importantly, don’t forget to:

update your Zoom app to the latest version, allowing you to move into break out rooms as needed
join our Discord server by Thursday, Dec 10th at 6 pm UTC
respect and convert the schedule (available at Discord and this website in UTC) to your local time

All relevant instructions can be found in the Info Pack.

This year’s event is organized with the support of the International Debate Education Association (IDEA) Netherlands and is part of the Debating Future of Europe project financed by the European Union through the Europe for Citizens programme.

The wait is finally over – the votes have been cast and our participats’ fate sealed. The prepared motions for Winter Holidays Open are:

This house believes that retribution should not be a function of the criminal justice system

This house would significantly relax labor regulations in times of high unemployment (eg. workplace health and safety standards, minimum wage, working hour restrictions, etc)

This house believes that individuals, upon having met their basic needs in life, have a moral obligation to donate a majority portion of their disposable income (Grand Final)

We’d like to thank everyone who participated in voting for our suggested motions, especially the ones who came up with the list in the first place – our Chief Adjudicators, Geetha Creffield and Tasneem Elias.

WHO 2020 goes online

Not surprising at all! In order to keep Winter Holidays Open 2020 as accessible as possible to debaters and adjudicators from all over the world, the tournament takes place online this year. To accommodate this change, the dates are changing as well – the event starts on December 12th and wraps up on December 17th.

Dates for WHO 2020 Announced

We’re happy to announce that the dates for the 8th Winter Holidays Open are December 11th to 13th 2020.

Winter Holidays Open is the biggest high school debate tournament in Europe and has so far welcomed participants from 29 nations so far – Australia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, India, Jordan, Lebanon, Moldova, Mongolia, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Tanzania, Tunisia, Turkey, UAE and USA. We hope you’ll join us in Zagreb for our 3 day debate tournament, an excellent opportunity for high school level debaters to develop their skills and compete against teams from all over the globe.

If you registered any Novice teams, please make sure those teams are registered as Novice (marked as 1 in the Novice column). Once the tournament starts, we won’t be making any changes.
